FAQ
Following are some Frequently-Asked Questions to help you in your tile selection. If your question isn't answered here, feel free to contact us.

Q. Is Hynes Tiles open on Sundays?
  A. Absolutely! Hynes Tiles is open:

     Monday-Friday 8.00am - 5.30pm
     Saturday 9.00am - 5.00pm
     Sunday 10.00am - 5.00pm

Q. Does Hynes Tiles install tiles?

 A. No, we've chosen to be specialists in tile supply which allows us to have the best people, the best service, and the best product. We can, however, give you a list of local tilers, either in-store or by clicking here

Q. I have no idea how many tiles I need! Can you help?

A. Yes, certainly. We can help you estimate quantities from a scaled building plan, or even from a drawing with measurements. We then recommend that these measurements are confirmed by your builder or tiler on site.

Q. Do you provide free written quotes?

A. Of course, it's all part of our service: we'll help you select tiles for your home and then provide a written quote. That's free, and without any obligation. All our quotes are numbered so if you'd like to proceed with the quote it's as simple as a phone call.

Q. Can I get my tile order delivered?

  A. For sure! We can organise deliveries to any site in metropolitan Melbourne, as well as to Ballarat, Geelong, and most of the Surf Coast. Instead of building in the delivery charge into the cost of the tiles, our delivery is not included in your order price and will be extra. We think this is fairer to everyone and it helps us keep the cost of our tiles low and competitive. We are open seven days per week for collecting your tile orders.

Q. Do my tiles need to be sealed?

  A. Possibly, depending on the product you choose. Typically, natural products need to be protected with a sealer. Most ceramics do not. Of course, our expert staff can advise you on the question of sealing.

Q. How do I care for my tiled floor?

  A. Again, this depends on the type of tile you choose. Generally speaking, our floor tiles can be mopped regularly with tile cleaners. We also have stronger cleaners for the initial cleaning, products that are designed to remove any grout residue. These products may also be used to remove most stubborn marks on your floor. Porcelains and some natural products like terracotta and slate require different products; we can give you all the information and a demonstration in the showroom.

Q. What is the difference between porcelain and ceramic tiles?

  A. Because of their durability and hardness, porcelain tiles have traditionally been used in commercial applications – think Flinders Street Station and commercial kitchens for example. Nowadays, for similar reasons, more and more people choose porcelain tiles for their homes.

Porcelain, or fully vitrified tiles, do not have a glaze over them like traditional tiles. Rather, the colour runs right through the tile from top to bottom, allowing them to be polished, honed, or produced in a natural finish, quite like natural stones like granite and marble. Because they don’t have a protective glaze, most porcelain tiles require special maintenance like sealing, something that we can explain further in the showroom.

The latest trend in porcelain tiles is blending the benefits of porcelain products (toughness, durability) with the benefits of ceramics (low-maintenance, high colour range, lower production costs) to create a hybrid product called glazed porcelain. These products have proven to be very popular for time-conscious homeowners. Remember, our specialist staff are at hand to help you choose the right product for your project.

Q. Are outside tiles different to inside tiles?

  A. Definitely. Outside, or external tiles are exposed to harsher conditions than indoor tiles. For this reason, outside tiles need to be resistant to the elements – like frost and slipperiness. The last thing we want is a tile so slippery you can’t walk outside if it’s been raining!

Hynes Tiles has a wide of product for outdoor use, including glazed ceramics, terracotta, slate, porcelain tiles, and sandstones, not to mentions all sorts of external feature tiles, like pebbled borders and sandstone chips.
